Mentoring Under the Stars

 

AFTRS is proud of the work past and present that is being undertaken in the arena of indigenous training and is dedicated to closing the gap of Indigenous Training in the fields of film, video, radio and online.

  • AFTRS Indigenous Concept to Page Workshop 2012
    9th to 10th  June 2012

    In June AFTRS will present a Concept to Page workshop with Meg Le Fauve and Sheila Hanahan Taylor.
    This workshop will be tailored to emerging Indigenous practitioners and writers on the key elements of concept and theme as it relates to constructing a fully realized screenplay. Practitioners will be enlightened as to how they can craft more engaging dramatic stakes, use their location/world as a character unto itself, and better connect a main character to their journey by finding a unifying thematic.

     

    Within this workshop Meg and Shiela will also cover the structural principles of genre, especially in the area of the Buddy Film and the Thriller, and how these principles can be applied to shape and define personal stories.
    Meg Le Fauve, an advisor at Sundance lab, is the former President of Jodie Foster's Egg Pictures.
    Her films have been nominated for a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and an IFP Award.
    Meg is an internationally acclaimed script developer and developer and is the former co-chair of the Producer's Program in the graduate film school at UCLA.

     

    Sheila Hanahan Taylor is a Producer/Partner at Practical Pictures, which recently produced Universal's Studios "American Reunion". In 2011 Sheila Executive Produced New Line Studio's "Final Destination 5" which grossed over $160 million worldwide.  She is an internationally acclaimed script developer and has at numerous film schools and festivals around the world.

     

    Understanding the foundations of story and genre present many unique challenges to filmmakers and this workshop will give practitioners the tools to shape their narratives into compelling outlines and screenplays.

  • AFTRS Indigenous Webisodes Course - ONLINE COURSE (Available in ALL STATES)
    21st May - 27th June 2012 
    (23rd May: 7:00pm to 8:30pm first chat session)
    23rd & 24th June - weekend in Sydney

    Workshop numbers are limited, for interstate people there is support for travel and accommodation to attend the Sydney weekend.

    This course is a one of a kind in Australia. This intensive, seven week, on-line program, with a weekend in Sydney for a meet and greet, will explore the art of creating a bible for a webisode series.
    Webisodes are slowly becoming the new "Short film" to give new emerging filmmakers and filmmakers who haven't worked in a series the opportunity to see how their film ideas might work in a longer format.
    This course is a one of a kind in Australia. This intensive, seven week, on-line program, with a weekend in Sydney for a meet and greet, will explore the art of creating a bible for a webisode series.

    The Course:

  • Runs for seven weeks in duration, with six weeks online and one weekend in at AFTRS Sydney for a refining of bible and pitching session.
  • Gives an overview of how to write a bible for a webisode series 5 X 5mins and the opportunity for feedback through exercises in your work.
  • Helps create the discipline of writing each week.
  • Exercises for each week will help people to build their skills in writing and developing a project.


PREVIOUS WORKSHOPS & INITIATIVES:

  • Deadly Connection - Digital Storytelling Workshop
    26th - 30th March 2012 - Horsham, Victoria

    Working in partnership with Wimmera Hub and the Deadly Ute Project, AFTRS will be delivering a Digital Storytelling workshop where the local Horsham community will have an introduction to Documentary Filmmaking techniques.

    The workshop is designed to teach the students to develop story and produce a structured short documentary based on a topic connected to the local community. Throughout the workshop the participants will gain hands on technical experience with state of the art cameras and recording equipment, interviewing techniques and developing the documentary.

  • INDIGENOUS MUSIC VIDEO WORKSHOP
    27th - 29th January 2012


    Music Videos can be one of the most accessible ways that individuals can begin a career in directing. By its very nature, the music video is stylistic, expressive, evocative, and free of many of the constraints of standard narrative filmmaking.

    Students are taught the most essential elements of what goes into making a music video, including: the right song, creating the look of the video and its overall aesthetic style,planning the music video in storyboards, learning how to shoot and keep the film in sync with the lyrics and editing.

    Working with an established Indigenous band, this course is designed for intermediate to advanced students working in media/Film and Television, this course is designed to cross and upskill industry film makers in the art of directing a music video.


  • AFTRS INDIGENOUS KIDS ANIMATION WORKSHOP
    23rd - 24th January 2012

    This two-day AFTRs Animation Workshop is designed to be creative, great fun and educational. Kids will get the opportunity to develop their own animated films and bring their imagination to life!

    A range of animation from Claymation (think Wallace and Gromit or Mary and Max) to cartoons will be explored in the workshop. Working in teams, the kids will develop their ownanimated stories that they then film and take home on DVD.

    The workshop is taught by professional animators and takes place at our state-of-the-art facility in the Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park, Sydney.

    This is a wonderful opportunity for kids to work in a real film environment with great teachers and to make new friends.

  • Pitch It!@Message Sticks
    Do you have a great idea for a fresh and original project, but are unsure what to do next?  How do you sell your idea to a broadcaster and receive funding for development - all within 5 minutes?
    AFTRS will hold a Pitch It! workshop leading up to the Message Sticks Film Festival with Glenys Rowe, who is a marketing strategist, specialising in film and audio productions.

  • Courses for Teens & Kids
    Is your teenager creative, interested in film and between the ages of 13-17?  If so, here is the course for them this Easter holidays.  Taught by experts at AFTRS, Australia's national screen and broadcast school, the Short Film workshop is the perfect course for gaining hands-on practical experience in the fundamentals of filmmaking.

    AFTRS also has a two day animation workshop is designed to be creative, great fun and educational. Kids will get to develop their own animated films and bring their imagination to life!

  • The Andrew Myer Indigenous Award
    The A V Myer Award for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders aims to select and support emerging talent as they pursue their careers in the screen arts and broadcast sector. One or two awards are offered at the end of each year for Indigenous students completing AFTRS courses who demonstrate exceptional talent.

  • AFTRS Indigenous Radio Workshops
    AFTRS has rolled out a radio training workshops in four regions of Australia. We have worked with Indigenous broadcasters to provide training and to develop an understanding of, and connection with, local audiences.  The workshops are also designed to raise mid level broadcasting skills in announcing and presentation.

    Macquarie Bank has supported AFTRS over the last few years through the provision of Indigenous Scholarships and with outreach mentoring programs in remote regions.

  • Working in Partnership
    The new work we have been doing is looking to the new digital world of online and web. Our first workshop in Animation in partnership with Screenwest and Goolarri Media Enterprises is on Animation and will be held in Broome in July.
