The Documentary department at AFTRS offers the following POSTGRADUATE courses specifically for documentarymakers:

 

  • GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN DOCUMENTARY FUNDAMENTALS

Improve your documentary skills and learn how to connect with industry.

You will learn about multi-platform storytelling, research and development, story analysis, scripting on the run, budgeting, pitching, archive use, intellectual property, interviewing, the current Australian documentary landscape and creative collaborations. Ideal for filmmakers with ideas in development who want to know how to move them forward.

By the end of this course you will have acquired a practical toolkit for directing as well as development and an understanding of the industry.

 

This course will run twice: once in Semester 1 and again in Semester 2

  • GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN DOCUMENTARY

Extend your skills and impact as a documentary filmmaker.

This course focuses on the future of non-fiction storytelling and engages with the latest innovations in documentary storytelling. During the course, you will work on solo and large crew shoots and across a variety of formats and styles with a range of subjects and professional actors. There are four short-filmed exercises: a cinema style doco, a hybrid exercise utilising a mixture of fiction and non-fiction techniques, an observational exercise and a re-enactment. The course also covers advanced research techniques and skills, interview and performance and culminates in an intensive workshop focused on the development of a slate of projects ready to take to market.

  • MASTER OF SCREEN ARTS

 

Explore and develop your own creative process and voice

An in-depth conceptual and practically focused course that will help you achieve mastery in your chosen area of specialisation. You will be supported to map out your own path in what is an increasingly competitive marketplace collaborating with others to achieve a distinctive work whilst exploring the relevant theories of filmmaking. You will be expected to develop and make an individual work or work collaboratively on a joint project.
